If you’re looking for a set of replacement iPod Headphones, the good news is that there are many options. Unfortunately this can mean that making an informed decision difficult. What we offer here is a compilation of the more popular and highly rated headphones available. In the interest of full disclosure, we have not personally experienced all the products listed below, but rather read about them on various online, and produced the list below based on the collective experience of those buyers that were generous enough to share their experiences.
Our somewhat arbitrary categories are broken out by price; those with a street price of under $25, under $50 and under $100. Here we go:
Best iPod Headphones under $25:
Sennheiser 300CX: These may be the top selling earbuds on the market. Currently these phones have been reviewed over 1000 times at Amazon with a rating of 3.81 out of 5. Frequent comments related to the good base performance and that these are a definite upgrade to default iPod or mp3 player phones. Touted as noise isolation headphones, most reported that they performed adequately in this regard, though all exterior noise was not eliminated.
V-Moda Base Freq: A bit more pricey than the earbuds listed above, but still selling for under $25, the V-Moda’s have a passionate following. With close to 900 reviews at Amazon, they share an almost identical average rating of 3.78 out of 5. Some mentioned that the base was a bit on the weak side, but the mids and highs were superb. These scored particularly well in the comfort department, but there appeared to be some concerns about the durability.
Best iPod Headphones Under $50
Altec Lansing UPH 336: Usually selling in the $40 range, the Altec Lansing appears to live up to their reputation as a top audio brand in the minds of most owners. While most marveled at the sound for the price, there were a number of complaints regarding discomfort or difficulties in getting a proper fit. In most cases this was resolved by modifying the tips or in some case purchasing after-market solutions. The Comfy Foam tips were mentioned as a great upgrade.
Ultimate ears Metro FI: These scored the highest average review rating among any appearing on this list, with an average score of 4.26 out of 5. Most were pleased with the comfort and build quality. More importantly, the consensus was that they also performed at a level not expected in this price range. A few did express disappointment in the bass range though.
Best iPod Headphones Under $100 (actually under $80)
Etymotic eR6i: Even the few reviewers that gave negative rating admitted that their complaints were not grounded in audio performance. The noise isolation design was mentioned to be quite effective in screening out ambient noises. The only negatives were about their durability and the tendency for the tips to slip off the phones and stay in the ear, when removed. These buds received an average rating of 3.98 out of 5, and retail for around $75.
Klipsch S4: If I were shopping for a set of phones for under $100, these would be my choice. With no glaring weaknesses reported they appear to deliver, outstanding audio performance, comfort, and a goof track record in the durability department.
